Prague, Christmas, 1922
Dear Children,
We have decided to unfold to you the soul of the people whose children you so kindly befriended and helped in the hard after - war times.
As long as they had a foreign ruler, the Czechoslovak people suffered greatly for several centuries past. And when their search for a friend or help here on earth proved futile, their simple mind sought relief above the clouds. There they created a heaven of their own.
A beautiful fruit of their childlike simple relation to God are the songs by which the nation expresses its joy of the birth of Him, who, it believes, will one day be its Saviour. Such are the Czechoslovak folk carols.
The Czech peasants, under the lash of the foreign scourger: the Slovak shepherds, whom the cruel usurper banished into rugged mountains and the petty craftsmen in the oppressed Czechoslovak towns and villages - they are the creators of these songs.
Of course, you do not understand our language, and so cannot fully enjoy the charming simplicity of the words., of which the verses of our carols are composed. For even the most perfect translation cannot do justice to the peculiar charm of the poetical expressions, by which the common people of Czechoslovakia utter their feelings. But, notwithstanding that, the melodies of our carols are sure to find an echo in your little hearts. And, that on hearing them you will also love them - of that we have no doubt. Then you will surely wish you could sing them yourselves and enjoy them whenever it suits you; and that's why we have published the present collection.
The composer, Joseph Křička, adapted them for a chorus of several voices... <省略>
And, surely, the joy these songs, whenever they will resound in your schoolrooms, will cause you shall be our second instalment on the debt we incurred when accepting your generous offer of help at the time of our need.
